João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva

Pedro Paiva (Lisbon, 1977) and João Maria Gusmão (Lisbon, 1979) exhibit together since 2001. A collaboration that began in the Painting course at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon, which both attended. This partnership has given rise to singular moments of artistic production, since the creation and production of pieces, curatorship of exhibitions and authorship of theoretical texts. The first presentation, of the duo’s work, took place at the InMemory exhibition, with an installation (untitled, 2001) curated by Pedro Paiva, at Galeria Zé dos Bois, in 2001. They were later winners of the EDP Novos Artistas Award. The work of João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva has privileged a great diversity of media, with film and photography being the most recurrent.
