Sublime Violence

December 6, 2022 (Tuesday)

What does it mean that we say something is sublime? What is the sublime? And what can the sublime still offer to thought today, and from what angles?

To listen to these questions and try to begin to answer them, we especially evoke the motifs that have guided the inquiries and conversations of the last few months at the escola livre (free school): capitalism, war, artistic representation (theater) – and the theological, on the one hand, and philosophical, on the other, that has been traced between them.

What does the sublime have to do with war, with capitalism, and with theater? And why formulate these questions under the sign of that word, violence?

In the next session, we propose an approach to the philosophical and artistic category of the sublime that will take into account two angles. On the one hand, the path of thought that the motes have successively offered to the free school program. On the other hand, informing this wandering through the research carried out by Teresa Projecto during her PhD in Painting (Painting time: the experience of the limit).

A Escola Livre

Since 2017, a group of students and teachers, from different areas and curricular contexts, meet weekly for what have been called the free classes. With no program, no assessments, no curriculum, the meeting usually responds to a motto, proposed in the previous session by any of the participants. This place, the place of the school – now called the free school – is where we can come to learn how to teach, and to teach by learning.

On October 11, 2021, the first meeting took place in a new space – Galeria Zé dos Bois – which hosts the free school in residence this school year! It was a moment of discovery and sharing, remembering some clues from previous classes. Inspired by a title by Maria Gabriela Llansol, The Beginning of a Book is Precious, we think we can say: this new beginning of the school is being precious.
