To close this crossing of cartography dispersed in six cardinal points, Pedro Melo Alves invites Audrey Chen for one last(?) duo born from the will to probe the unknown. North American with origins in China and Taiwan, Chen is a classically trained artist on the cello who has leveraged much exploratory work, not only on that instrument, but also through voice and the occasional use of analog electronics. Two decades in a mostly solitary course and a relentless search for new forms of pure expression, resorting to lyricism, extended techniques, repetition and hypnosis through sound. After years focused essentially on the use of the cello, entangling her natural sound in the schemata of electronics, the last four years have seen her return to the use of the voice as the primary vehicle of that same expression – which makes perfect sense when something is so visceral and personal. Moments of ecstatic elevation in dialogue with the breaths of intimacy and almost tactile processes of sensorial discovery in the moment. Improvisation at its most revealing, almost fragile in the way it is exposed and that has led her to collaborate with a myriad of remarkable people like Phil Minton – absolute herald of the voice as a non-idiomatic means of expression -, Kaffe Matthews, Maria Chavez, in Afterburner with Doron Sadja or in the Sen Ryo No trio with Tara Transitory and Nguyen Bali.
