Maripool

It was 2013 and Natasha Simões was 18 years old. It was then that she moved from Lisbon to London, got a job at Whole Foods and, when she got her first paycheck, she immediately bought a guitar, which was followed by long evenings of self-teaching, pulling out her favorite riffs from the jangle-pop, midwest emo and shoegaze of the ’90s. Then, using a four-track tape, she ventured into her first original compositions; she set up a drum set in his bedroom and learned to play bass; she made her own music videos and designed the posters and covers for her records, finally achieving the self-reliance and independence that characterize the whole DIY and bedroom pop wave she identified with early on. However, the pillow doesn’t only bring good dreams, and here is the birth of the alter ego Maripool: the website Records I Like, to describe the sound of her single “Soflty” (Practise Music, July 2022) – whose videoclip includes Natasha being chased by an evil court jester – refers to the hypothetical nightmare pop genre; in the same vein, the website Beats Per Music speaks of a dark and threatening atmosphere in her single “Blindness” (Strong Island Recordings, February 2021). At the Aquarium, Maripool will have a band to perform the full instrumentation of her songs. AR
