Conselho das Tias (Aunts’ Council)
Marga Alfeirão is in residence from September 8 to 20, collecting self-defense strategies and tactics developed by former residents of Bairro do Chinês—the largest slum in the eastern part of the city, a few streets away from ZDB 8 Marvila. Marked by a movement for the right to housing, self-construction, and resistance, these territories of Poço do Bispo, Braço de Prata, Marvila-velha, and Chelas saw several women collectively fight the violence of the old regime and domestic violence, occupy houses with their children, and confront the security forces.
What were—and what are—the strategies used by women to defend themselves?
The Conselho das Tias (Aunts’ Council) is a proposal for rescue and listening. A call to bring together the elders, their knowledge, and forms of resistance, promoting relationships with the younger generation and intergenerational transmission.
