BERTIE is a virtual reality (VR) experience for the stage, where a group of people find themselves in an immersive video game designed specifically for this project. Thrown into the apocalyptic setting of an online multiplayer game about to be shut down, the player-performers use VR headsets and avatars to explore a techno-melancholic territory filled with piles of digital trash and abandoned characters, dealing with issues of legacy, orphanhood, and waste.
BERTIE connects theaters, cities, and distant audiences, creating a hybrid experience, simultaneously in-person and digital, that can take place in three different cities, three spaces in the same city, or three rooms in a single building. The show explores themes such as techno-anxiety, new forms of empathy, and gaming communities, prioritizing sustainability and environmental conservation by reinventing circulation models and promoting a remote workflow that reduces travel and set transportation. We propose a new ethic of digital coexistence: we do not reject technology, but we demand political space in these environments dominated by Big Tech.
