After a visit to the Ajuda neighborhood and Mariana’s studio, and a subsequent encounter with many drawings, small paintings, sketches, cinematic frames, situations, and playfulness (more or less serious), we talked about her creative tree—the branching out of interests, forms, subjects, and materials that ultimately result in what may or may not manifest as objects and grand finales.
Somewhere during our afternoon, Mariana used the term pre-painting, and in recent weeks I’ve let it serve as the motto for sharing the satellites that come together tonight.
(… ) there is no possible redemption, only the neurotic repetition of the gesture—painting, scratching, sculpting, filming, like someone trying in vain to sketch the autonomy of that which haunts them. (…)
Johnny Y Los Baby Gatos will round out the evening with a selection of cumbia, salsa, psycho Latin grooves, surf rock, rock ’n’ roll, irony, and humbleness.
