A duo formed by people who met here, lived here and naturally became part of this city’s pre-pandemic art scene, Or Sobre Blau present their recently released album Making Friends, which has earned the seal of approval from the Belgian label STROOM, following its reissue of The Piri Samplers / O Terço dos Homens in 2024. Closely linked to their shared experiences in Lisbon, that raw debut, born of improvisations with little prior planning, now has a carefully considered – and inevitably more coherent – follow-up in Making Friends. Crafted over six months, between Catalonia and London, Making Friends weaves the visual fragments of the debut into fully-fledged compositions, sometimes songs, underpinned by the acoustic and electric guitar work of Kiran Leonard and Andreu G. Serra, gaining expressiveness through careful piano arrangements, field recordings, percussion and other unobtrusive elements. And voices. Between Leonard’s English and Serra’s Catalan, at times in simultaneous translation. A track that could be aligned with a pure conception of post-rock, before the genre became synonymous with bloated ramblings and insipid flourishes, as an ever-evolving synthesis of ideas drawn from folk, psychedelia and drone. Echoes of Tom Carter’s mysticism, the deconstruction of the American canon by Gastr Del Sol and its continuation in Jim O’Rourke’s Bad Timing/ The Visitor, the hypnotic naturalism of the Jewelled Antler Collective, who do not fix their imagination on American landscapes, but instead chart their course through the unknown, between the liberation of melody and subliminal tension, light and shadow.
