Maria Gil holds a degree in Actor and Theatre Directing Training from the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (2003) and a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Autobiographical Performances and Intimacy from the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at the University of Glasgow (2009).
She is the founder and artistic director of Teatro do Silêncio, where she creates, coordinates, and produces a range of artistic projects, including performances, performative walks, guided tours, and publications. She taught theatre in primary and secondary education (2002–2012) and, since 2012, has worked with several public and private institutions, conceiving, developing, and delivering educational activities and strategies that bring together imagination and critical thinking.
Together with filmmakers Filipa Reis and João Miller Guerra, she co-created the television series Outra Escola, produced by Vende-se Filmes for RTP2 (2019). As a training artist, she took part in the project LADO P, a co-production between Teatro do Silêncio and Vende-se Filmes, working with people deprived of their liberty. The project resulted in the documentary series Fechado (2019–2023).
She is a lecturer on the Theatre degree programme at the School of Arts and Design of Caldas da Rainha. She lives in Sintra, where she practises and studies therapeutic Chi Kung with Lourenço Azevedo.
