John T. Gast

A conduit for endless transformation, the British artist has been a constant presence on the avant-garde fringes of London’s electronic music scene. True to his personal anonymity and his distancing from the media, his name has taken on the air of an urban legend amidst the most impenetrable depths of contemporary electronic music. Whilst artists such as Actress, Dean Blunt, Delroy Edwards, Burial and The Caretaker may also move through similar territories, the truth is that Gast has already carved out a unique imaginary space, intrinsic to his own artistic quest. Drawing on post-punk, hip hop, techno, dub, industrial, ambient and countless other sonic territories in a way that is unmistakably his own, his work reveals a brilliant consistency. Always demanding in terms of aesthetic subversion and emotional complexity, he does not merely revisit sonic matter; rather, he seems to distil these references into memories and notes, creating a constantly evolving sonic collage. A vision that equally permeates the soundscapes of his label, 5 Gate Temple, a safe haven for urgent and indefinable musical material.
Infant has only just landed in our hands, but we already have the feeling that we’re looking at one of the most ferocious albums of 2026. Gast’s compositions have always been strangely magnetic, defying explanation for all that seems to radiate from them. Playing with ambiguity in the hyper-reality of the present, Infant unfolds as one of the most hypnotic and ever-shifting chapters in his already long and fascinating body of work. From frequencies salvaged from sidereal dub to sonic machinery, every element is crafted in minute detail. There is meticulousness, certainly, but above all there is an uncontrollable desire to destabilise the so-called natural order. With an intelligent restlessness, reflected in the handling of silences and the melodic architecture, sensory insights emerge that lodge themselves, almost comfortably, in the unconscious.
It’s not every day that this sorcerer emerges from his bunker, especially to these parts. On this return to Lisbon, we find him in particularly dazzling form. Still in the process of deciphering and marvelling at Infant, everything suggests this will be a concert that people will be talking about for some time to come.
