Liturgy

A practical embodiment of the misanthropy and nihilism inherent in the genesis of the second wave of Black Metal, the horde of solitary creators within the genre, postulated by Burzum or Ildjarn, continues to this day to be a significant part of, and a conduit for, highly personal visions concerning its foundations and pioneering spirit. In the United States, this took on particular significance at the start of this century through a series of West Coast projects such as Xasthur, Draugar and Leviathan, entities whose work reflects that same deeply personal quest, forging their own myth. Without any common ideological or aesthetic fixation. Far removed from the more trivial self-destructive impulses and scorched-earth policies, Haela Ravenna Hunter-Hendrix also first gave expression to her Transcendental Black Metal in a spirit of self-sufficiency and self-determination with Immortal Life, before that very expression literally became a manifesto and transcended – bad pun intended #1 – truly embodying the genre’s truest intentions with the colossal Renihilation in 2009, by which time they had already formed as a band.
An ambitious journey that has continued ever since, questioning the very essence of Black Metal at every turn in a process of constant reinvention that has earned him some… well, quite a lot of derision from the most conservative and staunch faction. Unfazed by this judgement, Hunter-Hendrix continues to undergo metamorphoses of personal revelation which, across albums such as The Ark Work, Origin of Alimonies or 93969 have continually unveiled fresh perspectives beyond blast beats, vokills and tremolo picking, weaving electronic textures, minimalism, choral music and unexpected rhythmic and timbral approaches into a complex tapestry. Without this implying a return to initiatory rituals, Hunter-Hendrix embarks, in this year of grace 2026, on a solo liturgy – bad pun intended #2 – that unites acoustic contemplation and electric impetuosity in a new work that also marks a new stage in this constant discovery. Of her own music. Of herself.
