Come and celebrate Fumaça’s birthday with us

Sat28.11.26
Galeria Zé dos Bois

In Lisbon, Fumaça will be at the Galeria Zé dos Bois, hosting talks, workshops and concerts.

[10.00 am to 1.00 pm] Workshop: Investigative journalism

Curious about journalism
Free for the Fumaça Community | Single donation of €30

How do you uncover what they’re trying to hide? Is it possible to be more stubborn than the state? In this workshop, we’ll share what we’ve learnt from eight years of investigating policing in ghettoised neighbourhoods and fighting the opacity of public administration.

G. C. Viegas explains the methodology behind ‘Fronteira do Medo’, based on a large number of interviews with residents and police officers, requests for access to government documents, analysis of public databases, the examination of hundreds of court cases, and open-source intelligence (OSINT) strategies.

[10.00 am to 11.30 am] Workshop: Spin a plate

Children and young people aged 12 to 16
Free for the Fumaça Community | Single donation of €30

Come and discover the art of playing music to an audience in a workshop with DJ Slick.

[11.00 am to 1.00 pm] Workshop: Music for podcasts

Technicians and creators with experience in audio production
Free for the Fumaça Community | Single donation of €30

How do you imagine and create what words cannot express? How do you use and manipulate sound to tell a story through audio? In this workshop, Bernardo Afonso, a musician and sound engineer, breaks down the creation of Fumaça’s soundscape, moving beyond the basics to explore the day-to-day creative process. From aesthetics to technique, from recording to production, he asks: what is the role of music in journalism?

[1.30 pm to 4.00 pm] Workshop: Screen printing

People carrying textiles (bags, T-shirts) to reuse

Vítor Sanches, founder of the shop and cultural project Bazofo & Dentu Zona, helps you print some memorable quotes from our hundreds of episodes.

[2.15 pm to 4.15 pm] Group listening session

Group listening session: The Frontier of Fear

Share your experience of listening to the episode together as a group – an immersive, simultaneous experience – and discuss any thoughts or concerns it has raised for you.

[4.30 pm to 6.15 pm] Talk: Mynda Guevara

On race, gender and class in hip hop

The work of a ‘warrior in this battle they call rap’, Mynda Guevara’s art overflows with her experiences in Cova da Moura. We challenged her to reflect on the political themes running through her lyrics, and the role of ideology in hip hop.

[6.30 pm to 8.30 pm] Discussion

With Cíntia Pereira, Jackilson Ramos Pereira and Lua Semedo on community and mutual support in ghettoised neighbourhoods

Drawing on their extensive experience of community organising, this discussion explores how people support one another when the state is present only to monitor and punish. We will focus on the work of the Pangue d’Ami Association in Rio de Mouro, Moinho da Juventude in Cova da Moura, and Vida Justa, in ghettoised areas linked to various urban centres.

[8.30 pm to 10 pm] Dinner: Ticha’s vegetarian cachupa

Donation (recommended: €7)

[10.00 pm to midnight] Concert
