Arriving with complete impunity and to little surprise on International Anthem, Kalia Vandever makes their solo debut on ZDB with ‘Mana’. The second solo release from the New York-based trombonist and composer, following their dazzling debut with ‘We Fell In Turn’ on AKP Recordings, ‘Mana’ expands on a vision already well-defined there, continuing the mesmerizing atmosphere of that first album. Featuring their own voice for the first time, ‘Mana’ offers a panoramic view of the electro-acoustic processes from the debut, weaving the melodic languor of the trombone’s sound into clouds condensed through its electronic processing, within an aura of reverberations and mirages, punctuated by piano chords in heartfelt contemplation. From this ethereal quality, their voice emerges with a soulfulness free of affectation, as if a call to earth—a poetic reflection of all the lyricism implied in the celestial harmonies of ‘Holding’, the resigned melancholy of ‘Your Fault’, or the ‘madrigal’ of ‘Waiting’. A sublimation of the personal sphere of an artist whose established credentials in the jazz scene—through cinematic band albums like ‘Regrowth’ and ‘Another View’—have led them to perform with Harry Styles(!) or Japanese Breakfast, and who finds here a gateway to revelations that are uniquely their own. Which welcome us.
