MURDER and murder (1996), directed by Yvonne Rainer, is a romantic comedy that follows the late-in-life romance between Mildred, a longtime lesbian, and Doris, who falls in love with a woman for the first time. The film candidly explores female aging, lesbian sexuality, and breast cancer, interweaving the couple’s relationship with the director’s meta-cinematic commentary.

Yvonne Rainer (USA, November 24, 1934) is an American dancer, choreographer, writer, and filmmaker. Her work is characterized by experimentalism and minimalism. She founded the Judson Dance Theater in the 1960s, a movement that influenced dance for decades to come. She presented her work as a choreographer in the United States and Europe, and in the 1970s, she filmed Lives of Performers, her first film. In the following decades, she completed seven films. Her latest, MURDER and murder, premiered in 1996 at the Toronto Film Festival.

SuperFLINTA

SuperFLINTA* is a transfeminist film club that grew out of a project by Francisca Antunes and aims to highlight films by lesbian filmmakers. Let’s bring queer identities to the forefront through film! Let’s play at being lesbians in the movies and reclaim the academic space to experiment!
In collaboration with various cultural venues in Lisbon, this film club showcases films that break the silence surrounding diverse sapphic identities and promote debate on gender, identity, and sexuality.

*FLINTA is an acronym for female, lesbian, inter, non-binary, trans, and agender people.
