On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, Galeria Zé dos Bois is pleased to present SINGSONG, an exhibition that brings together a group of contemporary artists whose works propose a challenging reflection on the possibilities of structures that mould cultural and artistic identity today. Taking a critical look at the mainstream, this exhibition seeks to question the idea of meaning and cultural and artistic production today, presenting a collective response that expresses a sensibility that rejects conformity, through a free place for individual and collective expression.

Through a variety of media and conceptual approaches – from painting, sculpture, textiles, comics, installation, performance and film – SINGSONG reflects the constant need for creation and material and manual practice as places of resistance. SINGSONG makes manifest the power of raw, insurgent energy that questions the status quo, the confrontation with the fine lines between imagination and experience, the distortion and agitation of these boundaries, the tension between moments of destruction and creation, the place of dream and illusion, inviting the viewer to reflect on how these narratives, both personal, collective and cultural, are constructed.

SINGSONG proposes thinking of the act of making and producing as the power to continue, to rewrite, to act on the present. In this exhibition, the notions of expectation and irony expressed in artistic practice are exacerbated in the face of a contemporary world where the basic structures of purpose, value and meaning seem increasingly arbitrary or meagre.
