One of the most active and tireless figures making waves in this country, André Neves has continually experimented—with expertise, flair, and a genuine sense of fun and conviction—with a whole range of historical forms and traditions, channeling them into a style that is uniquely his own and which, following releases like ‘Coisa Ruim’ and ‘inocente indecente’, detours like Sandra Snares or Wolfgang Tinder, and various collaborations, has reached a new level of affirmation with the recently released ‘Ave Rara’. A title that could well apply to him. A grand album in both size and scope, without the bloated ambitions we might associate with the double album format, ‘Ave Rara’ maps out Silver’s impulses and obsessions, drawing on a vast network of collaborators under the Gold umbrella, in a continuous act of discovery as informal and critical of today’s world as it is playful and lysergic. The light electro-pop of ‘Turbulência’, the motorik of ‘O Trabalho é Absurdo’, the sunny piano-house vamps of ‘Nest Box’, the foray into fourth world on ‘L’Imitation du Soleil’, the dub of ‘Primavera’, the acid electro of ‘Gotas’, or the discourse of ‘Pássaros e Moscas’ are coordinates of his constantly expanding, singular, and open world. Unable to count on the entire Gold lineup for the celebration, Silver performs on this occasion with Puçanga and Bertrand aka Menino da Mãe. We are in good hands.

Scorpions do Barreiro is a somewhat ever-changing band that grew out of the core group formed in 2017 by Vítor Lopes — Frango, Barcos, or Olive Troops SOS, among other projects, as well as one of the ringleaders of Out.ra — and Jaime Norberto — a seasoned and well-traveled soul from this and other worlds — and today typically features Sara Zita, Tiago Franco, and Diogo Vaz. An ever-relevant embodiment of the effervescent freeform spirit around 2005—which pulsed simultaneously all over the place in more or less impromptu events and gatherings, myriad CDrs and small, carefully curated releases, and a sense of communion and freedom rarely seen before or since—these Scorpions do Barreiro now play a somewhat rare role. Without any filters or nostalgia, they live in the moment when the jam breaks free from its narrow premises and embraces the unknown, in line with the explorations of Jackie -O Motherfucker, NNCK, Excepter, or the Vibracathedral Orchestra in wanderings where traces of kösmische, dub tactics, non-idiomatic improvisation, “jazz,” and the rawest post-rock soundscapes coexist unhurriedly, without destination, and with a wave of camaraderie that leaves no room for egos. Just for the music.

Fluid, pulsating, and dreamy are some of the keywords that define Paixão’s sound. A tireless explorer of psychedelic soundscapes, he builds his repertoire without regard for genre, telling a story that blends dub elements and textural explorations—merging different eras of dance music into a unified, visionary journey.
