A meeting full of connections between two well-recognised figures from around the country, continuing their work together after their absolute debut at Cafe OTO, which leaves us full of expectation. Perfectly justified, given the potential that this pair shows in their past and present work and in what is implied here about the future. Hence the connection that all this makes, particularly in the way that in their own spheres both musicians have fostered a trajectory that continually seeks new forms and means, without fear of facing the inhospitable, and with a special affection for percussion. In Guthrie’s case, this is absolutely mirrored in a continuous exploration of the infinite potential of drums and percussion, absorbing languages ranging from free jazz, electro-acoustic, minimalism or Indonesian gamelan to arrive at a plural and rooted understanding that translates into polyrhythms, drones, sampling, improvisation or amplification in a whole myriad of collaborations, soloisms and incarnations: from the percussion and gamelan ensemble NIST NAH to collaborations with the likes of Mark Fell, Container, Oren Ambarchi or David Maranha. Koshiro Hino is a superlative figure of sonic adventures on Japanese soil, whether it’s through the hypnotic non-rock of goat(jp) to the conjuring of electronics and cello materialised in KAKUHAN with Yuki Nakagawa, the tribute to Yoshi Wada – INTERDIFFUSION – paired with FUJI|||||||||||TA or his solo exploration as YPY, as well as work in the field of performance and installation. Having been a recurring visitor here in these parts in some of these lifetimes, it always reveals new perspectives at every turn and path, with Guthrie as the conspirator of choice for new visions.
