Onda Avalanche Vulcão
2025. Mauro Restiffe and Maria Manoella. Artist book. Limited edition of 500 copies of which 50 special.

The series Onda Avalanche Vulcão by Mauro Restiffe and Maria Manoella, combines intimate portraits captured by the couple with photographs of landscapes they explored together, establishing a symbolic dialogue between the human body and the forces of nature.
Created in collaboration with Familia Editions, the eponymous artist book includes a special edition accompanied by a signed and numbered photograph from the series.
The aim of this editorial project—which offers a more intimate presentation of the works in terms of scale and rhythm—is to deepen the mystery surrounding intimacy and our relationship with images. Onda Avalanche Vulcão invites us to reflect on what it truly means to let go and connect, both physically and emotionally.

* Translator’s Note:
The title Onda Avalanche Vulcão translates literally to Wave Avalanche Volcano. The original Portuguese has been retained to preserve its poetic and conceptual resonance.

Mauro Restiffe

For the past few decades, Mauro Restiffe (São José do Rio Pardo, Brazil, 1970) has been building an archive of photographs taken with the same analog camera, composed predominantly of black-and-white images. While he resists the notion of working within specific themes, his practice consistently returns to everyday scenes and spaces. His photographs encompass architecture, urban environments, landscapes, and moments of intimacy. Even when engaging with historically charged subjects, such as significant political events, Restiffe’s gaze gravitates toward their peripheries, capturing what unfolds on the margins. A quiet, contemplative quality emerges in his portraits, where an intimate human presence surfaces. The distinctive grain of the analog format, a rejection of the disposability of digital imagery, imbues his work with a textured atmosphere, situating his photographs between memory and narrative.

Maria Manoella

Maria Manoella (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1978) moves fluidly between theater, cinema, and television, with a body of work marked by the poetic investigation of themes such as the female body, nature, and untamed territories. In her most recent projects, the actress has delved into the language of autofiction, incorporating personal experiences as a means to reflect on the condition of women. By intertwining reality and fiction, life and performance, Maria crafts narratives that preserve the metaphorical and sensitive power of art, creating a theatrical space where the intimate becomes a collective gesture.

Familia Editions

Familia Editions, founded in 2018 by the editor and designer Maria Lago (Rio de Janeiro), is a project that aims to interpret, create and publish the work of contemporary Brazilian artists. The artist’s books published by Familia are the result of a very close and personalized collaboration between publisher, artists and printers. Familia focuses not only on the curatorship, interpreting the artists’ works, but also on the care with materials, final presentation and printing techniques, always elaborating unique projects for each artist.
