ANO Q: Rádio Quântica’s Festival Returns for its Fourth Edition!
On the 20th and 21st of September 2022, Rádio Quântica presents the 4th edition of its non-profit community festival Ano Q (formerly Ano 0). Spanning two days, two cities, and two historic venues in Lisbon (Galeria Zé dos Bois) and Barreiro (ADAO), this event celebrates some of the most intriguing sonic iterations in the Portuguese scene by emerging artists and artists from typically marginalized communities.
Following the success of the first edition in 2019, with excellent feedback from the community and press like Wire and DJ Mag, its return in 2021 and 2022 confirmed the festival as a triumph of DIY culture. The festival has expanded its horizons beyond music to include fashion, performance arts, workshops, and talks.
ANO Q 2024 brings together a diverse selection of artistic projects that push boundaries through their practice. We view cultural programming as a resistance to profit-based events, offering an alternative to the mainstream in an increasingly gentrified Lisbon, where polished cultural standardization imposed from above or outside has become the norm.
The official programming starts on Friday, September 20, in Lisbon with DJ Giovanna performing a comedic and campy DJ set to set a colorful tone, followed by bass-heavy experimentalist Moss Kissing and Porto’s queer performance legend in the making, Lava. Beatmaker Oseias and rapper Wugori follow with their collaborative off-kilter boom bap hip hop, then sisters Yeni & Yeri present a silky blend of Cape Verdean, Brazilian, and Portuguese music re-imagined through an R&B, soul, and funk lens. Fashion Eternal then delivers their power ambient with synths and drums in an immersive sound wall before DJ Danifox closes the first night with his infectious batida variations.
On Saturday, Ano Q moves to Barreiro, where the ADAO stage will be taken over by women-only roda de samba Coletivo Gira, followed by an indie rock, shoegaze-drenched concert by young art school students, Roadkill. The dreamy experimental pop of Surma, the iconic songs of Maria Reis on voice and guitar, and closing the festival on a soulful, celebratory note, Lisbon’s beloved DJ duo DJ Carin and Varela will take the decks, accompanied by exuberant, improvised dancing from the legendary queer party CURVS performers.
An opening session in central Lisbon will be announced later, with free entry for everyone.
