Regular presence in many of the places of real interest and revelation in jazz music, improvisation, freedom, Hernâni Faustino started – on electric bass – from the most disruptive rock in the 80’s with K4 Quadrado Azul to embrace the double bass and from there spread out in a multiplicity of formations and collaborations that are a faithful portrait of much vital movement in these meanderings. Therefore, he waited more than 30 years and a lot, a lot of accumulated horsepower to make his solo debut. An album revealing that same calm, Twelve Bass Tunes does not explode with an urgency, nor does it seek to break with any tradition. It’s like the simplicity of its title, an album of 12 themes, captured with all transparency and light by Joaquim Monte and produced by Sei Miguel, which reveals all the lyricism and expression of his double bass. A breathed record, capable of aligning moments of beauty and restlessness in the same continuum, Twelve Bass Tunes both allows itself to be carried away in a tighter attack of the bow and makes room for silence to assert itself. The work of someone who already has nothing to prove – except to himself – but flatly refuses the torpor that can result from it, Twelve Bass Tunes is, for now, a very beautiful mirror of Faustino’s language.
