BRAINROT by Onio & Fer

Brainrot is a work in progress by António Onio and Fer, which began on the Internet. The term “Brainrot” refers to a class of videos and memes whose goal is to create a sensation of brain rot through a hypermix of symbolism, humor, and surrealism. At the same time, it proposes a reflection on the glut of stimuli: are we developing new ways of thinking, new ways of being, that is, creating evolution?

The Brainrot proposal becomes a theatrical experience, as the intention is to transform this content—which we usually consume alone—into a community experience. Can a meme form communities? Can a niche reference bring together people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and nationalities?

The dramaturgy process is chaotic, as Onio and Fer seek to break away from a logical structure, exploring what it means to work purely on instinct: what feels right, what feels wrong, what we feel like doing at the moment.

Our process also involves filling our minds with a variety of different structures, mixing things that, at first glance, don’t seem to fit together. However, even so, we manage to identify these influences, and the end result becomes something that, in a way, is credible.

Lore and the creators’ personal relationships also come into play, as they are dramatized and transformed into fiction. This dynamic prompts reflection on the history of theater as a space for psychomagic.

The characters materialize on stage, creating structures and relationship dynamics that are experienced during the performance.
