Fine Glindvad Jensen – better known simply as Fine – is another alumna of the Danish school of esoteric singers who are rethinking the song format at the beginning of this decade: Astrid Sonne, ML Buch, Molina. They all share similar musical references and an aesthetic for their songs. In them, they paint pictures that seem to be from the past, but are actually from the future. They play with nostalgia, but long for utopia. A utopia where we are all free, we are all poets on the loose.
In the songs on Rocky Top Ballads, the debut album by the Danish singer and producer, we lose ourselves, again and again. We let ourselves be carried away by everything that happens, by every dreamy guitar, by every melody of Fine’s enchanting voice. We close our eyes and realize that everything is right, or at least it seems so. You can hear references to Mazzy Star, Cocteau Twins, Liz Phair, Lana del Rey, Dean Blunt. The 90s are alive and well, it’s true, but the brushstrokes are fresh—and the direction is forward, always forward, even when it’s part of the creative minds responsible for writing the songs of a K-Pop group (NewJeans).
In its purest form, passion is euphoria, euphoria is passion. Or else, it’s all just a dream, a flash that illuminates our minds with the most beautiful colors on the planet. For a moment, everything is possible to forget, everything is possible to want. In Fine’s music, that’s where we stay. Over and over again. An endless loop filled with songs lost between the passion and euphoria of feeling everything, between the pain and the possibility of losing everything.
