— João Almeida, João Pereira, Norberto Lobo, Yaw Tembe

Thu21.10.2107:00PM
Galeria Zé dos Bois

The second time this quartet, formed by easily recognizable figures from this part of the world, has appeared at the Casa da Cultura in Setúbal. Counting on the bass of Norberto Lobo, the drums and percussions of João Pereira and the trumpets of João Almeida and Yaw Tembe, they could be a kind of extension of Peachfuzz – made up of the first three – were it not for this music being another, with an already well-defined character. It is the norm for four well-trained musicians who here intertwine in a music that does not disdain techniques inherited from jazz – a rich inheritance that has been the natural habitat for Almeida, Tembe and Pereira and increasingly worked on by Lobo – but does not stop at a canonical ruminations nor drowns in free improvisation. Breathing and fluid music, based on Pereira’s polyrhythmias, Lobo’s pulsating electric bass lines and wind harmonizations, with improvisational riffs and fire, that not being fusion reminds, yes, some fusionist rehearsals that we associate to Chicago at the turn of the century, from HiM to Tortoise with the shadow of Rob Mazurek hovering, but also Afrobeat or a redux version of Steve Lehman’s octet in its more harmonic orchestral plot.
