There are books that struggle with the noble task of seeking goodness, the human essence, or a world that is finally liveable. Others dismiss any possibility of hope, enveloping us in their oppressive sphere. But perhaps the great task of this century lies in neither of these approaches. Perhaps what we need, precisely, is to understand the present, the ‘now’, so different from what it once was. We need to understand ‘kawaii’.
This is where BFKA Cutencyclopedia comes in, a collaborative publication by Chili Com Carne, Thisco and Palpable Press. Drawing on her PhD thesis, Hetamoé (or Ana Matilde Sousa) approaches the subject in an archaeological and surgical manner, bringing together various essays and illustrations that aim to highlight what is happening in pop culture and how ‘kawaii’ has infiltrated the media, rendering it unrecognisable.
This presentation will be attended not only by the author, but also by Marcos Farrajota (editor at Chili Com Carne) and Pedro Moura (researcher at FBAUL).
