visions of prosperity (2020–2026) is a film by Henrique Loja that interweaves images of forest fires with footage of tourist parties off the Algarve coast. Drawing on the artist’s experience during the Monchique fires, when ash from the blazes fell on participants of a booze cruise, the film establishes a connection between hedonism, mass tourism, and ecological collapse.
Through a fragmented and violent montage, visions of prosperity brings together festive rituals, extreme landscapes, and images of destruction, prompting a reflection on self-destruction, non-reproduction, and extinction.
Originally presented without a soundtrack, a new version of the film features musician and designer Tiago Biscaia, who was invited to develop a live sound performance to accompany the screening, further exploring the connections between euphoria, violence, and collapse present in the work.
